Shawl Weaving Artisan - Power Looms and Handlooms

       Jacquard design and weaving

Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
       • draft a jacquard design on graph paper
       • thread and mount harnesses for a jacquard loom
       • cut cards for jacquard loom.

         Requirements

          Tools/Equipment’s/Instruments Materials
         • Jacquard loom - 1No. • Note book - 1No.
                                                            • Pencil - 1No.
                                                            • Sharpener - 1No.
                                                            • Eraser - 1No.

       PROCEDURE

TASK 1: Design on graph paper
1 Decide the design size eg. 100x100 or 200x200 5 Now start creating the design on graph paper, using
picks. a grid as a guide.
2 Take a suitable graph paper size based on design’s 6 Then use different colours or symbols to represent
          size. different yarns or threads.
3 Draw a grid on the graph paper using a ruler. Ensure 7 Add specifications for the jacquard loom such as,
the grid is evenly spaced and aligned with the paper • Number of shafts.
          edges.
                                                               • Number of picks per repeat.
4 Sketch your design idea on a separate piece of
          paper.

TASK 2: Harness mounting and card cutting of jacquard loom weaving
1 Harness mounting Step 4: Check and adjust
Step 1: Prepare the loom 1 Check the harnesses for proper alignment and
                                                               tension.
1 Ensure the loom is clean and free of debris.
2 Adjust the harnesses as needed to ensure smooth
2 Check the loom’s harness mounting system for any operation.
          damage or wear.
                                                            2 Card cutting
       Step 2: Identify the harnesses
                                                            Step 1: Prepare the cards
1 Identify the harnesses to be mounted, including their
corresponding shafts and connections. 1 Ensure the cards are clean and free of debris.

2 Check the harness labels or markings to ensure 2 Check the cards for any damage or wear.
          correct identification.
Step 2: Determine the card layout
Step 3: Mount the harnesses 1 Determine the layout of the cards, including the
1 Begin mounting the harnesses, starting from the number of cards and the pattern of holes.
          centre of the loom.
2 Consider the design being woven and the loom’s
2 Attach each harness to its corresponding shaft, requirements.
          ensuring proper alignment and tension.
                                                            Step 3: Cut the cards
3 Use the loom’s harness mounting system to secure 1 Use a card cutting machine or a manual card cutter
the harnesses in place. to cut the cards.

2 Cut the cards according to the determined layout,
                                                               ensuring accurate and precise cuts.
